Robert Moss

Robert Moss was born in Leeds and attended St Paul’s school in London. Achieving a first class honours in biochemistry at University College London, he resurrected the university's Exploration Society. In 1963 he began studying grouse nutrition for a PhD in zoology at Aberdeen and later spent a post-doctoral year working with the three ptarmigan species in Alaska. Until 1997, he worked with the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, mainly on the population ecology of red grouse and capercaillie. He continues to enjoy scientific work and being a wildlife consultant.

With less than twenty species worldwide and only four British and Irish species, the grouse is surprisingly well-known. Its habitats are diverse and relatively remote – ranging from deep forests, through open moorland, to Scotland’s highest peaks.
