b.1921. Writer, ornithologist and sound recordist, author of Woodland Birds (19971), British Thrushes (1978), British Warblers (1985), and British Larks, Pipits and Wagtails (1992).

Always a field naturalist, also a history graduate, magistrate and bomber pilot instructor during Second World War (DFC 1944). BBC wildlife sound recorder from 1950, and later director of wildlife films. Prolific broadcaster on radio and television; active in nature conservation, locally and nationally.

Author of 20 books, including The Public Life of the Street Pigeion (1979) and an autobiography, Birds of the Air (1976). Attributes literary productivity to good memory and allowing his thoughts to flow.
