Ernest Pollard

b.1940. Ecologist, author of Hedges (1974, with M.D. Hooper and N.W. Moore). Son of a Nottingham lace-maker, graduated in horticulture at Reading which led on to a PhD on the ecology of insects in hedges and crops. Joined Nature Conservancy (later ITE) at Monks Wood in mid-60s, specialising in field-based studies of invertebrates, including Roman snail and white admiral butterfly. Ran the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, introduced in 1976, and co-author of Atlas of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland (1984) and Monitoring butterflies for ecology and conservation (1993). Early retirement 1986, now farmer in Kent and ecology consultant.
