b.1942. Botanist and horticulturalist, author of Ferns (1988). From 1971 scientist in charge of ferns, fern allies and gymnosperms at Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. Well-travelled since undergraduate years in quest of these ancient plants, with help of pilot's licence and own Land Rover.

Broad research interests include horsetails, palaeo-botany, phytogeography and rehabilitation of historic fern fardens. Editor Fern Gazette 1974-85. Boundless energy and enthusiasm; fern polymath; lists interests as 'photography, painting, walking, writing and recording all I see.'
