Having just received ‘Art of the New Naturalists’ courtesy of Amazon, is there any way of telling if this a first edn, or a reprint?

If it is a first edition I don’t really want to remove its plastic wrapper.

Does anybody know if this has been reprinted after the October 2009 run?

I could not find identifying 1st Editions discussed elsewhere on this board. Any clues will be appreciated.

Hello,

There have been two print runs of the book as a HB edition (with no current plans to reprint a third time), and the reprint is indicated on the inside of the book, on the so-called imprint page (page 4), where you will find a line of numbers – if the ‘1’ is missing this means that it is part of the 2nd printing of the book.

The 1st print run was published in October 2009, with an immediate 2nd run following in November of the same year.

Best wishes,

Hi Julia (Collins),

How many of the 1st editions of "The Art of the New Naturalists" with the original Blue Band showing Clifford & Rosemary Ellis's name were issued/sold? This would make it a 1st/1st with the 1st original blue authors title band I believe?

The general release of the 1st edition but with the later blue band which had the blue band without Clifford & Rosemary Ellis's name on had far more copies in circulation I assume? This would presumably mean a 1st edition with 1st state blue band being far more sought after as only a few were ever issued (only N/Nat enthusiasts that attended New Nats symposium in October 2009 could purchase this particular speciality as the remainder of the blue bands with Clifford & Rosemary Ellis's name on were pulped (so I believe)).

Thank you,

Lee Slaughter (Cornwall).

Hi Lee,

The original blue band was incorrectly printed from an old file, which is why only 100 copies of the book will have been wrapped accordingly. The remainder of the 1st print run blue bands (2,100 in total) will have been pulped.

All best,
Julia

Thanks very much indeed Julia for the accurate info from Collins. This obviously makes the blue band with Clifford & Rosemary Ellis's name on an "Error" as like in Stamp Collecting as it was actually printed in error! Just 100 in existance!! This, it seems may be the next N/Nat to really increase in value as there are only 100 inexistance! Wonder what the value of a 1st edition with this Clifford & Rosemary Ellis Blue Band will be worth when we emerge from this economic doom & gloom?

Comments anyone?

Cheers,

Lee (Cornwall).

I don't actually believe the number is as small as 100. In fact I'm sure it's nearer 250, and actually think this figure was mentioned at the convention by Myles. Every couple sold at the first NN Collector's Club event had one on, and there were plenty left on the table afterwards, most of which are now, I believe, with someone not entirely unconnected to one of the authors...

Hengus,

I agree with you, as I have seen copies offered for sale on this forum and on eBay as well as at least one other book seller; I cannot imagine that so many attendees at the first symposium would have subsequently sold their copies.

In fact, Peter Marren offered a number of signed copies with the "original" blue band for sale on this forum last year for the cover price of £60 inc. P&P.   I don't have time to look now, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find the original post if people are interested.   I've no idea if he still has copies remaining as I took up the offer at the time :-)

Proud to have paid just £21.75 for my "as new" copy off ebay back in March this Spring which was very welcome at the time as our money was earmarked for home improvements so had to not buy N/N's for a while to fill some of the gaps but just over £20 was affordable. Has anyone got their copy in an archival clear D/J cover even though there isn't a D'J but just the blue band? The clear part of one of the D/J protectors sleeves minus the paper was the only solution I could work out, but it makes it fiddly & most awkward to pick up & read & I'd preferred it if the book had a real Dustjacket as all other New Naturalists do!

Cheers,

Lee (Cornwall).
