Hi All,

How do I tell the difference between the first and second states of the first edition of 'The Natural History of Orkney', nos. 70, a and b?

I fear that I shall have to seek a copy of whichever state I do not possess.  An expensive undertaking either way around!!

Sally

Hi Sally...this description of a 2nd state book by Tim Loe (who's just publishing the new Collector's Guide with Tim Bernhard) explains the difference:

(This is the First Edition Second State of which only 500 copies were printed. Collins were unable to fulfil orders for the first state copy of which only 725 copies were published and so subsequently bound up an additional 500 copies. Second State copies are distinguished principally from the first state by being a few mm. shorter and are bound in pea-green "Linson" embossed paper-cloth rather than dark green, slightly shiny buckram. Additionally the dust jacket has the benefit of not being covered in a plastic "Duraseal" protector, unlike the first state)

I'm not sure you 'have' to have both states you know... You're not a bloke by any chance are you? That's a very male characteristic you know... :-)

I'm not sure it's correct to say that 500 copies of the 2nd State version were printed - I believe that 2nd State copies were simply soft back editions that were rebound as hardbacks because Collins under-estimated demand.   There is also a second state edition of british Warblers.

Personally, if I was lucky enough to own a first state edition of either, I wouldn't bother spending my money on a second state copy; I think they are rather dismissed by many collectors, but perhaps they are the fortunate owners of 1st state copies!

If you do decide to purchase a 2nd state copy, beware of modern rebound paperback editions with modern facsimile / digitally printed dustwrappers.
