32 ‘Views’ and not a single person can be bothered to respond to the other message (see: http://www.newnaturalists.com/Forums/Topic991-16-1.aspx ).

The copy Amazon sent me has a ‘blue band’ under the plastic protective sheet with Marren / Gillmor printed on it.

Is there any reliable way of discovering which NN are first edition when it is still inside its plastic covering?

No, fraid not... although I am unaware that the title has been republished if it has been.

Having said that, there was an earlier version of this (I believe it should be described as First Edition, First State as opposed to the more usual First Edition, Second State) with a Blue Band that, in addition, included the names of the Ellis's as well and was then withdrawn. Only about 250 copies were printed - they were for sale at the first New Naturalist Collector's Club symposium.

I'm no entirely sure you can bully people into using a forum or to reply to certain messages. But that's part of the problem...when the Forum owners care so little about encouraging debate there is very little for the very few active members to discuss. Having said that it's always worth a good search before you ask a question...I'm pretty certain the AofNN title is discussed elsewhere...

Thanks for replying Hengus, nice to know there are still people around on this NN board. No, tried looking in the usual places for information on confirming 1st Edn for this 'Art of...' book but no details anywhere.

I'm sure somebody at Collins must know the publication details, why the lack of clarity to an issue that most readers and collectors are very interested in?

Apologies if you felt bullied, this was not my intention. But how do we get people to contribute? Note the title of this topic especially!

All the best to anyone reading this.... ;-)

The only way to make a forum work is to have committed people who engage positively running it. The future, I'm sure, lies in a private forum...Collins only want this to advertise their wares, and to my mind at least, don't even do a good job of that... It's a great pity.

I might be tempted at some point, but just got too much going on at the moment...

once the collecting new naturalists hits the bookshelves there will be new interest in the series & new collectors will push up 1st edition prices, so get them while you can @ today's cheap prices.

Collins should include a new bookmark with each new edition advertising this website, that's one way to generate new interest

regards

paul

In an earlier post I alluded to the issue of print run sizes e.g. Dragonflies was over 5,500 but prints runs have now dropped back to c.4,000 although I'm not aware of print totals since Bird Migration in 2010. These high totals explain how Amazon etc can purchase stocks and sell them off cheap. I think a max of 3,000 first editions would ensure that the series would remain very collectable.

Regarding the Art of NN, I have a note in my files saying 3,000 were initally printed in October 2009 but a further 2,000 were printed soon afterwards because of the initial demand; though I don't know how anyone would spot the difference? This total of 5,000 would again explain how they are being sold off for buttons at the moment.
