There's a major 14 page article in the new issue of Book and Magazine Collector (June 2010, No 321, £3.50) on the series including full valuations.

Some, in my opinion, very strange valuations in there (£400 for a leatherbound Dragonflies anybody. Yes please....!!). Pleasing to see they mention the first state blue band on the Art of the New Naturalists, mind!

I also look forward to reading No 99, 'Cower' :-)

Despite these minor gripes, it's an essential article. Plenty of input (in an interview) from Tim Bernhard of the NN Collector's Club and should be a good recruiting tool for him.

It's anonymously written by 'betweenthelines'.

Thanks Hengus,

I shall find a newsagents that sell this magazine this week. V.Interested to see the latest values! I can't see how I can get a 1st state band for The Art Of The New Naturalists book though! Any ideas??? Thanks for keeping the whole of the forum aware of this article & other breaking news of N/N related facts/issues!

Cheers,

Lee.

Thanks Lee.

Incidentally there's an advert in the listings in the rear from a bloke in NI selling a 1st of 77 The Soil F/F for, er, £15. I hope he's now read the valuation list :-)

We would be very happy to let you have a leather-bound dragonflies for £400! We put the valuation together for the article. Pleased that you appreciated it.  Tim at Loe Books.

I'm sure you would, Tim....I'm sure you would, as would most of the owners of said book! But as they're readily available on eBay for £160-£200 (and hard enough to sell at that price - I know!), and still available from Collins at £250, perhaps £185 might be a more realistic valuation in the current market? You pays your money, you takes your choice, I guess....

Tried to get a copy of Book and Magazine Collector today in my home town of St Austell in Cornwall & they don't stock it in W.H.Smiths! Another newsagents in the town are going to phone me to see if they can specially order it! Blimey; i didn't know it was that difficult to get this magazine! By the way Hengus, what is the value of the 1st state blue band on 'The Art of the New Naturalists' with Clifford & Rosemary Ellis's names on as well as Peter Marren & Robert Gillmor's? Are you able to get me one? I only have the normal one with just Peter Marren & Robert Gillmor's names on.

Cheers,

Lee Slaughter.

They DO stock it in all WH Smiths, Lee. I suspect that it just hasn't quite got there yet...I am a subscriber so might have got it a few days early?

I wouldn't get too excited, Lee...it only adds a tenner to the value according to the valuation guide (£80 to £70), although I have to admit to having sold 2 copies on eBay for £110 and £95. I've only got the one in my own personal collection left now, I'm afraid. As there were supposedly only 150 copies in that original band (and they were I think just available at the Collectors Club symposium) I probably should have held on to them! Always worth asking any sellers selling a 1st edition though, just in case.

Incidentally the reprint of the book does say 'reprint with corrections'....do we have a list of what those were?

I'm certainly not encouraging people not to buy the magazine (I think you should) but I have scanned it (and sent a copy to Lee) anyway (I demand that hour of my life back please!).

If anyone wants a copy let me know...the whole article is about 7Mb so make sure you can cope with a mail that size. If you just want the price guide alone that will be about 2Mb. Its quite readable in the scans but you might just want a magnifying glass to hand!

Keep any requests to private messages please (obviously including an email address).

Mine is a 1st edition but without the Ellis's name on the band so don't know what the corrections were! Thought the 1st edition would have been proof read before being published to avoid errors?

Thanks again for your help Hengus,

Lee.
