As my copy of Books and Naturalists must make its way not only across the Atlantic Ocean but across North America as well in order to reach me, I'm curious to know if anyone closer to the source has received a copy of his or her own yet? First impressions?

Cheers,
John

I have just received my 1st edition copy today (6th February) and it looks very nice. I have only 'flicked' through it and it looks like a good read indeed. A lovely plate of Butterflies on page 72 from a book dating from 1741!! Fantastic plates on page 329 taken from a book/books 'Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles' 1885-98. there were 421 paintings reproduced for this above publication on birds and I'm sure that would have been a cracking publication all those years ago!

It seems that this book will require the reader to sit down & read it rather than looking at the pictures like I have only done so far! Oh to be retired. So many hobbies/interests & too little time! I also quite like the Brown with Red 'NN' logos inside front & back covers. I don't think this has been a colour scheme on N/N's before?

Comments anyone else who's received their's please?

Lee.

Just received my copy from Amazon. The usual high quality publication in this series: lovely dustjacket and solid production: would still like the book number in gilt on the spine though.

Lots of reading in the book so my initial reaction is based on a quick flick through. I would have preferred more plates (very few full page ones) and certainly more illustrations taken from the books themselves than pictures of the authors (there are only so many bewhiskered Victorians I can take (and that's just the women)). However at nearly 500 pages should prove to be an invaluable reference book. I did notice that Beatrix Potter not referenced in the index which is a pity as her delicate watercolours of fungi would have been a nice plate.

Though retired I still don't have time to read my NNs as I would like: grandchildren have a way of obstructing reading!

Meanwhile, here in the former colonies, the waiting continues...

I'm still waiting too, though in my case the book has only to negotiate the North Sea and the southern Baltic. Maybe the heavy wintry conditions at each end are slowing things up.

I agree that even we who have reached retirement can still have an enticing backlog of NN reading to look forward to in between grandchildren duties and much else, including practical appreciation of local habitats, fauna and, when this ice-winter lessens its grip, flora too.

"Books and Naturalists" arrived today having taken two weeks, which isn't too bad. Looking forward to a good read.

I am very pleased to report that, in a small U.S. village not far from the Pacific Ocean, a pristine copy of Books and Naturalists has arrived safely.

Cheers,
John
