I recall Peter Marren saying that Ladybirds NN81 was the first NN to reach a £30.00 price tag. Perhaps other collectors would agree with me that it was, it fact Ferns; NN74 which was the first to make £30.00 milestone.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry, but the only one I have of the 'Golden 13' is number 77 'The Soil' which is not priceclipped & shows £27.50 although it is not the thickest volume (only 192 pages) so maybe Ferns had far more pages & so Collins justified the £30.00 pricetag but I have not got a copy so can only go on your word & assume it has far more pages?

Cheers........Lee.

I suspect that Lee is right in suggesting a link between the number of pages and the price, as Caves and Cave Life (#79) is also priced at £27.50 and is about the same thickness as The Soil (#77), yet the thicker #78 (Larks, Pipits & Wagtails) is priced at £30.

However, these titles may not have been published in the same order as their edition numbers - I'm haven't checked.

I was flicking through The New Naturalists the other day and wishing Peter Marren had included dates of publication, as opposed to just years....this confirms it!

I now have N/N no 74 (Ferns) & it has 430 pages (more than double the pages of N/N no 77 The Soil) & this obviously justifies the £30 price tag in 1988 when it was published!

There's one on ebay today at £425 or offers & it has an unfaded D/J! Good price compared with the average £900 valuation in 2008!

Lee.

jump in there quick, there is market re-valuations for the economic downturn, once this has finished & the upturn starts you may regret not purchasing the 1st edition.
