If anyone is interested, I'm selling the slipcase that came with a boxed set that I used to fill some gaps in my collection (starting bid of 1p, no reserve) - it might appeal to more serious collectors / people who bought facsimile editions before the boxed set became available, and if I get a little contribution towards my next POD order, then everyone is a winner.

This begs a couple of questions: 1) are the facsimile sets the same as the POD in terms of quality;

2) could Collins do sets of PODs at a similar price (ie £29.50 per volume rather than £50.00 minus the 10% discount)?

Speaking of ebay, there are a suspicious number of facsimile editions vols 1-10 now on sale there, some even at 80 GBP! Presumably these are from opportunistic (if I may use a polite term) Folio Society members trying to cash in on the deal previously discussed. I merely plan to sell off the original four volumes I have which have been duplicated by my Folio set purchase.

The full boxed set of facsimile editions is still available in the Folio Society sale at £125 plus P&P.

I received my set about 2 weeks ago and they are fantastic value for money. Further to my original post on this topic, I'm pretty certain that I've received another communication from the Folio Society that these could count as one's first year membership commitment ... but I cannot now find it :-( Nevetheless, if you're desperate to buy these, I'd recommend giving them a call (I posted their number last time).

Given the discount available at the FS, I don't quite understand why Collins think their current discount is attractive! The last newsletter was promting the great discounts available - facsimile editions reduced to £52.50 each.

Anyway, a great set of books produced to a high standard, acknowledging the minor complaints raised by others. At £12.50 each, they're cheaper than even the poorest first edition copies available on eBay ... or most of them!

Roger, thanks a lot for the tip off. I joined the Folio Society in '08 but generally toss away all their mail having initially done the 1st year stuff of introductory temptations plus 4 other books. I was aware of the boxed set when it was priced at 375 gbp, but now can't resist the offer you flagged up here, and a set is hopefully on its way. Although I already have 4 of those 10 volumes, it's still a great deal. Regards Rich

Well my set (ordered 4th Jan) arrived today in perfect condition, and with 2 Folio Society packs of cards to boot. Think I'll probably keep these as I really like the look of them in the Box even though I agree with the description of their 'faults' as stated elsewhere.

But still...If that ain't worth £125 (£12.50 per volume!) of my money, then I don't know what is. Not sure I'd be saying the same if I'd paid 6 times that, mind...

Re- your helpful info/tips; I will sleep on this, but having obtained the facsimile of 'Butterflies' by E.B.Ford just before Christmas for £38.00 (instead of £75.00) I do not think it is as good as the originals but at £12.50 per volume based on £125 for the first 10 through the Folio Society then you cannot complain at that price! I like the originals better but a crisp & pristine replica of this 1945 classic book is still nice & makes good reading! I also have always liked the dustjacket of 'Butterflies' which shows Swallowtail Butterflies and their larvae on it and as I am a bit of an enthusiast on the butterfly front I have always had a bit of a soft spot for this particular D/J.

Give them a phone call (0207 400 4200) - they might allow you to join on one of the other offers thatare frequently publicised in other magazines (e.g Radio Times) and then let youbuy the facsimile editions as your annual purchase commitment. I've just checked the website (I am a member) and it shows that the facsimile editions count as 4 volumes, so I am assuming that they must count towards your total annual purchases.

Sadly, I don't think so. The best thing is to make friends with an existing member! They can have items delivered to another address (but it will have their name on it). My friendly Folio Society member has already been contacted!

Would love to know how many sets they've shifted at that price.....

Incidentally, the Folio Society is largely responsible for my existence as my parents met in London in the early 60s when the FS had a physical club/bar in Town, and my Ma was pulling the pints (or serving the champagne glasses as was probably more likely). Sad to say I still don't like most of their editions (the odd rarity like these NN books, and the Eric Gill ltd editions being the exception)....

In response to your request, I hope you will find the following of interest.

1) I was reading London's Natural History last night when a couple of things intrigued me: see if you can find Aldenham reservoir on Map 1 pages 12 & 13. Not so easy but I think I finally found it.

I was looking at Appendix E, p.259 and something caught my eye. The Hon. Secretary of the Hertfordshire Natural History Society was a Miss Eileen Gibbs. I though this looked familiar and checked some of my books. My copies of Numbers 23, 26 and 54 all carry a Hertfordshire and Middlesex Trust for Nature Conservation Library stamp and were donated by a Miss M. E Gibbs. I suppose it is probable that this is one and the same person?

2) Have you seen the pictures posted on the New Naturalists Collectors Club website of the 1st symposium? I haven't seen anyone mentioning them on this forum but I could be wrong. Also a really nice article on the same subject written by Ken Davies in the latest NNCC newsletter.

3) Another possible reason for lack of postings on this site (in addition to those given with which I mostly agree)......and this is just my personal opinion - but I don't find it particularly user friendly e.g. three or four different headings where you can post. I was used to the original forum and found it easier to use.

4) Can anyone tell me what the ''howling misprint'' is in Mumps, Measles & Mosaics which is mentioned on p. 193 of No. 82 The New Naturalists 2nd edition? Is it the 'horse rug' mentioned on p.77 - should this be house rug? I don't know.

5) Have you ever noticed that nearly all of the birds depicted on the spines of Robert Gillmor's dustjacket designs look to the right of your bookshelf, with only the Lapwing of No. 91 breaking ranks as far as I could see?

Thanks Hengus. Just wondered if there is an easy way to join the folio society & get the new year offer of £125 for the full set & then unjoin? I don't like to be tied into having to buy at least 4 x books from them by the end of next March, 2010. I also wonder how much they pay wholesale for these boxed sets of 10 x facsimile N/N's nos 1 -10. With this offer it's just £12.50 retail cost per book & display box free! Damn fine value for money indeed!

Thanks for the tip Roger but I have looked on the Folio Society website and cannot see this offer. Do you have a link you could post please? Is it only for members (I am not a member) & do they only restrict this offer to existing members or to non members too? Do you think Collins might match this price too? £750 original price & now down to £125!!!!???? Is it exactly the same display box too or a Folio Society Box?
