Max S. Walters

b.1920. d.2005. Botanist and botanic garden director, editor of the series from 1981 to date, and author of Wild Flowers (1954 with John Gilmour), Mountain Flowers (1956 with John Raven) and Wild and Garden Plants (1993).

Cambridge botanist, graduate of St John's and past Fellow of King's College. Lecturer in botany and curator of botany school herbarium 1948-73, director of University Botanic Garden 1973-83.

Leading experimental taxonomist, working mainly with British flora; active field and local botanist: co-author of Atlas of British Flora (1962) and editor of Flora Europaea (1964-80). One of the best-build bridges between scientific botany and horticulture; a lover of plants in all their aspects and guises; and genial company.
